Producing Boxplots for Groups

Click Graphs > Boxlplot... > Simple > Define.  Move the dependent variable to box labeled Variable:, and move independent variable to box labeled Category Axis:.  Finally, choose Options... and deselect the box for groups defined by missing values.

Comparing Means with Independent Samples t-Tests

Click Statistics > Compare Means > Independent Samples T Test...  Move dependent variable to the box labeled Test Variable(s):, and move the independent variable to the box labeled Grouping Variable:  Next, select Define Groups... and enter the values of the grouping variable you want to compare.
