Working with MAXQDA – Episode 1

Update, Dec. 19: A high-resolution version of this tutorial is now available.
Today I’m introducing the first in a series of video tutorials I plan to do about working with MAXQDA, software to support the analysis of qualitative data. Researchers across the social sciences analyze qualitative data, and there is a lot of software to help—for a comprehensive overview, see Harald Klein’s Text Analysis Info Page, and for advice on choosing among the most popular packages, see the working paper by Ann Lewins and Christina Silver. I prefer MAXQDA as a general-purpose package because it is relatively easy to use and supports a range of qualitative and quantitative methods for analyzing text.

The first episode of the tutorial series is a very basic introduction to the interface of MAXQDA. In future episodes, I’ll discus how you can use MAXQDA for the basic tasks of analyzing qualitative data, using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The series will complement the workshop I co-teach in the NSF-funded Short Courses on Research Methods in Cultural Anthropology (SCRM) on Systematic Methods for Analyzing Qualitative Data. That course was initially developed by Gery Ryan of RAND Health; I now teach it with Amber Wutich of Arizona State. We’ll also be offering a one-day workshop at the next annual meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology, March 19, 2009, in Santa Fe, NM.
I encourage your feedback and suggestions about the tutorial series. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

This is great! It’s targeted at, and accessible to, folks with anthropological (dis)inclinations for technology. I’ll be using this software soon; looking forward to more.
